The Mayor’s Advisory Committee for Age-Friendly Leonia is charged with spearheading the Borough’s program. Age-Friendly Leonia’s startup funding was due to a grant from the State of New Jersey Department of Human Services/Division of Aging Services.
The initiative started in August 2024 with a commitment on the part of the Mayor and Council to seek Age-Friendly status for the Borough. After applying to AARP, the committee got to work on developing a needs assessment survey, its key initiative for Year 1.
Having launched the survey in three languages in Autumn 2025, Age-Friendly Leonia realized a robust response — more than 500, well above what was needed for statistical viability.
The results were tabulated and analyzed into a report which was published in early 2026.
Survey results have given rise to needs that are unique to our community. The intention is to ensure that Leonia provides for residents as they pass through various stages of their lives. Currently, an action plan is being developed to be submitted to AARP for review. Once approved, work will begin toward the plan’s goals through a process that will be collaborative and ongoing, evaluated through progress reports along the way.
Age-Friendly Leonia has been conducting focus groups to delve deeper into some of the survey’s findings. The community also participated in a Bergen County Age-Friendly survey conducted in Spring 2026.
These listening sessions, combined with the results of the surveys, are informing the action plan and timetable for implementation.
Guiding the survey and action plan is the 8 Domains of Livability, an established framework used by AARP network members to organize and prioritize work. The availability and quality of these features within a community are known to impact the well-being of older adults and people of all ages.
