Leonia is one of more than two dozen New Jersey communities and counties that are members of the AARP Network.

This program provides a framework that equips local leaders and residents with a guide for assessing the needs of older adults and then creating and implementing an action plan based on those results.

The process to earn the Age-Friendly community designation takes five years.  The graphics below illustrate the process as well as the eight domains of livability on which the framework is based.

Leonia is well into the process of identifying and acting upon initiatives that will make our Borough a better place to age comfortably and gracefully.

Mayor’s Advisory Committee
for Age-Friendly Leonia

After a year of internal discussion and consideration, Leonia applied in September 2024 to join the AARP Network of Age-Friendly States and Communities. The Mayor’s Advisory Committee for Age-Friendly Leonia was formed to carry out the new initiative for the Borough.  In a strategic move, members of the community who were involved with  other organizations and committees in town were invited to join the AFL Committee.  This was to ensure that the committee members would be aware of other initiatives in town and would organically integrate an age-friendly voice into those groups. It would also provide a framework for dialogue and potential partnerships as the needs of older adults were better understood.
